This book is not about "home schooling".
It is about teaching. It is divided into 8 units: phonics, reading, language arts, science, social studies,
math, thinking, and study skills. Each unit goes into detail and tells what a child should learn at each grade level. While it is not intended to be a checklist, I use my book that way. I don' t usually write in my books, but this one is covered with checkmarks, notes, and titles of books to use with each subject.
This book helps me each summer as I work on lesson plans for the coming year. One review I read of this book compared it to E.D.Hirsch's Core Knowledge Series ("What Your __th Grader Needs to Know"). I would disagree. Unlike Hirsch's books (which I have just finished reading out loud to my kids and DO recommend), Bautista's book is more for the parent/teacher.
It is not a book to be read with/by your student. I was disappointed with the history section of this book - it is exclusively U.S. history. The section on government is also almost entirely "American". The rest of the book is very good.
One summer just before we went on holidays, I stopped at a book sale to buy a book to read while camping.
This book caught my eye and has become one of my favorites. The subtitle is "Things to Know From Kindergarten Through Grade 6". This book is not about "home schooling".
